The ‘check engine’ light is never a reassuring sign. It can mean your service vehicle either has a small problem — or an expensive one.
One diagnostics company, OBD Solutions, aims to give fleet managers and drivers a clear view into vehicle performance with the OBDLink MX WiFi, which the company describes as a “Swiss army knife for your car.” The device is essentially a WiFi-enabled version of the company’s existing OBD adapter.
What exactly can it do? Well, nothing just yet. OBD Solutions turned to Kickstarter to fund the project, and the adapter isn’t yet in production. But the manufacturer says the WiFi version will “turn your smart phone, tablet, or PC into a sophisticated diagnostic scan tool, trip computer, and real-time performance monitor.” The device will be both iPhone and Android compatible and will work with any vehicles sold in the U.S. after 1996. The beta test devices are currently priced at $79 and will be available in April 2014, according to the Kickstarter campaign.
